Easter Assemblies

As we returned to school after Easter our School Chaplains led powerful assemblies for all year groups, focusing on the Resurrection. Our community was challenged in this Easter season to think about what this means in our everyday life, with a particular focus reflecting on 1 Corinthians 13, 4 – 7: 'Love is patient and kind….love never gives up'. How we treat everyone is important. In form time children were asked to reflect on a short prayer: 'Lord let me be patient and kind to everyone I meet today'.

Live Dance Show is back!

We were delighted to welcome back parents and families to our live Dance Show last week, an outstanding event with routines from each year group from Year 7 – Year 11. This is a particularly wonderful event as we welcomed so many children from our Primary schools, along with a special routine from West Lancashire Community College. Our own student Dance Leaders have shown such commitment and skill in working with younger children in Our Lady's and in visiting our Primary schools each week, devising, teaching and leading routines that were a joy to watch! Huge congratulations to all involved!

Opportunities for Year 11 Leavers

Assett Training were invited in to school to present information about Traineeships and Apprenticeships to our Year 11 students, as part of our ongoing CEIAG Programme. They specialise in the delivery of Apprenticeships from intermediate to higher level, Traineeships, commercial courses and functional skills. As always, we received lovely feedback from our visitors about our students: 'The students were a great reflection of Our Lady's during the presentation and also in the workshop afterwards….I really enjoyed the visit and seeing such a positive school environment'. Support and guidance for all Year 11 students is ongoing in helping to prepare them well for their next stage.

Sign Language Skills in Year 8

Well done to the young people in Mr Taylor's Year 8 class who have successfully completed their level 1 course 'An Introduction to Sign Language'. All children worked hard, were assessed and passed with flying colours! Mr Taylor's smile was almost as big as the children's – rightly proud of their achievements!

Year 11 Reward Breakfast

Year 11 are continuing to work hard in preparation for their external exams in a few weeks. Over 60 students attended our Easter School, with tutors providing targeted revision sessions in Maths, English and Science, and with many students attending sessions in other subjects with our teachers. Early morning extra sessions starting at 7.30, along with after school revision sessions are well attended and Year 11 students enjoyed an extra special free breakfast last week as a reward and encouragement to keep going!

World Earth Day 2022

To coincide with World Earth Day on April 22nd our Future Global Leaders have highlighted their school Eco project in leading the reduction of plastic consumption in school. Earth Day is an annual celebration that honours the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect Earth's natural resources for future generations. The following link is from the company Utility Aid which is sponsoring the water bottles for the school project:

Student Leadership

Governors thanked representatives of student leaders from across different year groups following excellent presentations in the Governors' Pastoral Committee last week. There has been a growth in student leaders since September 2021, with an additional 115 leaders across all years. Form Prefects are keen to take on this responsibility on a rota. Dance Leaders visit primary schools and West Lancashire High School to teach dance routines. The after-school STEAM club (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) continues to thrive and Y8 student leaders Lucy and Amy, reported how much they enjoy supporting and helping Y7 students with activities and in demonstrating experiments, under the careful guidance of Mr Young. Amelia and Sophia shared how their work as Sports Leaders has given them opportunities to represent the school and develop confidence and qualities they will use in later life. Leah and Lili have taken on Mentor roles, helping others who might struggle with anxiety, listening to them and helping them to calm down. Ms Guy reports how their help is very much appreciated.

Mrs Gresty, Chair of Governors, thanked students for the outstanding contribution they are making in helping younger students in our school and in the local community, and for their hard work and commitment.

Talented Poets' latest Publication

Many congratulations to the eighty three Year 8 students who have had their poems published in the Young Writers 'Twisted Tales'. Students were buzzing to unwrap their own copies of Twisted Tales on 22nd April. We also have copies in our own school library. This mini saga anthology contains all their short stories and students are all now entered into the draw where they could win £100. Now that the book of short stories has been published, a team of judges will have to make the agonising decision to choose the overall winner of this National competition. Well done to all these talented students. Watch this space.

Rugby and Football

Well done to all involved in these teams' success, representing our school so well!

Year 8 winners of the West Lancashire District Rugby tournament and Year 11 runners up in the West Lancashire District football cup!

Commonwealth Baton Relay

Earlier in the spring term we took part in a fantastic Commonwealth Baton Relay event which involved over 50 schools across Lancashire. Our pupils were outstanding. We welcomed St James’ Primary School to Our Lady's, with a large audience, a unique banner made in Our Lady's, and a special song sung by Amelia Byrne in Y9. We then made our way on foot all the way to Dalton Primary School where we were welcomed and shared our school values. We continue to be so proud of our pupils. You can find a great video of the Commonwealth Baton Relay and lots of other information on the Games by following the Link:
